Our wildlife is suffering, facing starvation, and being forced out of their only remaining habitats (our parks) by special interest groups, even though many of these parks were purchased and designated for wildlife use. Wildlife is being maimed, mutilated and even killed outright by cats. These same feral/stray cats also threaten public health and tourism at our parks. Supporters of managed cat colonies believe that this non-lethal population control method will help reduce the number of unwanted litters and stabilize the population of free roaming feral and stray cats over time. However, there is no credible scientific evidence to support their claims. In contrast, the establishment of cat colonies on public lands encourages dumping of unwanted cats, and pose serious public health and conservation concerns. The intent of this website is to provide a response, based on the scientific literature and recent local studies, to the assertions made by proponents of managed cat colonies. The South Florida Natural Areas Coalition agrees that feral and stray cats are kept in inhumane conditions in county parks, and pose serious public health and conservation concerns.
